WESTERN GHATS AND EASTERN GHAT MOUNTAINS.The Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats mountains are located on the western and eastern sides of peninsular India. The Western Ghats are block mountains while the Eastern Ghats are remnants of the Moddar range. The Western Ghats are continuous ranges while the Eastern Ghats are located in the form of broken ranges.

- Average altitude 1000 to 1300 meters.
- It is spread over a length of 1600 km from the banks of Tapi river to Kanyakumari.
- The four major passes are Palghat, Bhorghat, Thalghat and Senkota Pass.
- It is not a real mountain range but a fringe of the peninsular plateau.
- The highest peak Annaimudi is situated in the hills of Annamalai.
- Further increase in altitude from north to south.
- Maharashtra is known as Sahyadri in Goa and Karnataka.

- Average height 900 to 1100 meters.
- Extended over a length of 1800 km from the Mahanadi valley to the Nilgiris in the south.
- They are also known as Purvadri category.
- Residual form of ancient folded mountain.
- Its highest peak is Visakhapatnam peak which has a height of 1680 meters.
- The rivers falling in the Bay of Bengal have eroded it from place to place.
