The exam follows a specific pattern, which includes the following key components:

  1. Exam Format: The UGC NET exam is conducted in two papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both papers are conducted in a computer-based test (CBT) format.
  2. Paper 1: This is a common paper for all candidates and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) designed to test the candidates’ teaching and research aptitude, reasoning ability, comprehension, and general awareness. The total duration of Paper 1 is 3 hours.
  3. Paper 2: Paper 2 is subject-specific and includes 100 MCQs based on the subject chosen by the candidate. This paper evaluates the candidates’ in-depth knowledge of their chosen subject. The total duration of Paper 2 is 3 hours.
  4. Marking Scheme: Each correct answer in both papers carries 2 marks. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
  5. Qualifying Criteria: To qualify for the award of JRF or eligibility for Assistant Professorship, candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks set by UGC. These qualifying marks vary for different categories (General, OBC, SC, ST, etc.) and are based on the aggregate performance of candidates in both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
